They can be a great way to pay for school and meet people and to have many opportunities you might otherwise not be exposed to.

You have to expose yourself to a lot of pressure and rejection in the process. And you may be spending too much time focusing on scrutinizing yourself.

If you can keep your head out of the clouds and focus on what it can do for you instead of getting wrapped up in the whole scene it can be really beneficial.

I think that beauty pageants can often be opportunities for people to show that the are more than just pretty, based on the contestants and the exact pageant, many times people have the opportunity to showcase that there is more to them than just "beauty", but brains and personality as well!

To each their own. If you don't like them don't participate. If you want the validation go for it. It is objectifying but no more than many other "acceptable" activities we all participate in.
and to cooley there are male pageants they are called body building competitions.

I think that like the old saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What's beautiful to the pagent judges, may NOT be beautiful to me.

To each their own.

It's what goes on BEHIND the scenes that I worry about.

(poor self-esteem inflicted by parents -"not good enough" complex- potential influence with eating disorders- too much $$ spent, not enough saved, etc)

A way to make girls almost anorexic and for them to cry for a week after they don't win.
