There is no generally agreed definition of time.
This is a moot point in religion and philosophy as well as science, but as your question is in the science section, I suppose the best answer is that time is the fourth dimension of the space time continuum. It appears to be different to the other dimensions, because it has only one direction. We can only move forward in time, and we have no control over the speed of movement.
You could look on the concept of dimension as a means of making sense of the universe that surrounds us, spatially and temporally. The first three dimensions deal in spatial location, the 4th in temporal location. If there wasn't any time I think the whole universe would collapse, I don't think everything would happen at once, I think everything would stop happening.
So I think time is more than a device, I guess I would regard it as a necessary abstraction of human thought.

read about 12 strand DNA at www.crystallinks.com you will see that the human mind is capable of a much higher level of perception naturally(an ability which has been surpressed) then how we percieve things currently. its theorized that all things, past and future, are all happening simultaneously but our mind in its current condition must arrange these events in a linear manner to properly absorb them. as we move closer toward the end of the mayan calendar (2012) the paradigms will begin to shift and reconnect our soul to the divine cosmic energy and time will again be non existant.

Yes I think it is. Time was invented to keep everything from happening all at once...things are bad enough...can you even imagine what we or anything else would be like if it was happening all at once????

Do goldfish or plants have "temporal awareness"? If not, does time even exist for them? Maybe they have some totally different kind of awareness that we cannot even comprehend, and for them, that is the 4th dimension.
