Do you have support for both types? If not check properly and buy the one which your motherboard will support, not just that which is fast.

Even if your computer is compatible for both, you may want to use the drive as a portable device and mind there that usb is more common in the world and a fireware device may hugely limit your possibilities.

In my opinion, if you are ready to shell money, go for a combo drive (that supports both usb and fireware). If not, then go for usb.

n.b. the bus speed of usb is higher, but it is the architectural difference that makes usb devices slower than fireware. It may be interesting to know that usb devices use 'master-slave' style while fireware is much more intelligent.

Firewire is technically faster and is recommended for Data and non Audio and Video files.

USB 2.0 is recommended for Video and Audio transfers.

USB 2.0 is cheaper to buy a PCI card for I do believe.( i payed $10) Also, it is 40 times faster than USB 1.1.

It would also depend on what connection your External HD has!!!
