I don't think we should distance ourselves, they are our allies, always have been. But instead of blaitanly taking their side everytime violence breaks out, we need to assume more of a peacekeeping role in the region, especially now. We're telling people that democracy and freedom is important in the middle east, and that we're trying to help the situation. That really doesn't make sense if at the same time we're also supplying Israel with a ton of weapons and backing them up when they go to war.
