Start with researching what others in your field and your region are getting paid - www.salaries.com It will tell you the median pay for your job in your area.

Armed with this knowledge - can you also document that you saved the company money or made them money? In other words, have you brought in any new clients or taken over the job of a coworker who left and wasn't replaced? If you can go in there and say something like "Since Joe Schoe left, I've been doing x,y, and z of his job, which saves the company whatever dollars in salary of hiring another person, and the median price for my job is whatever a year - would you consider a raise to ...?" Ask for the high end of what you want - if you want $500 a month more but you can live with $300 a month more, start by asking for the $500, and see what they say.

If they won't or can't cough up the cash, think about other perks - more paid vacation. a company car. an expense account.

Good luck!!!!!

Well, it's nice to be equipped with salary statistics. But the most important thing you need to do is demonstrate how you provide revenue to the company, or help them save money. Essentially, anything you can do to demonstrate that you are a profit center, not a cost center for the company.

Give concrete examples of your worth and what you've done for the company.

Do not give personal examples i.e. having kids or needing a new car.

Stick to your performance.
