My dr put me on Macrobid for a UTI, but it says on the package that you aren't supposed to take it if you are 38-42 weeks pregnant, which I am. I asked him about it, and he interrupted me and said it was safe, and moved right along (grr). I figured it was technically safe, but I wanted to know WHY you weren't supposed to take it so far along in your pregnancy. Does anyone know?

No i do not know why, but the same thing happend to me at the end of my preg. and I can assure you that my son was healthy. He was a c-section but that was because the cord got tangled. I, too read that macrobid was prohibited late in preg. but my doctor said that not treating my UTI was more dangerous than the macrobid. While you are online, check out a search of Macrobid and see what you can find. I hope that all goes well, relax... take some deep breaths and for goddness sake, GET some SLEEP before this baby gets here...

Find the number for a nurses hotline and ask. I have taken macrobid before for an extreme bladder infection but I was not pregnant. Instead of going to the doctor now I take an over the counter medication called CYSTEX. Have you ever heard of cystitus? Its a UTI that can be caused by sexual activity. If you find it read the box and make sure its ok. I would be pissed if a doctor just brushed it off like that. A great person to ask is your pharmacist. They are required to know about almost all of those medications. They are the easiest person to ask too. Call up the pharmacy and ask to speak to someone. Better safe than sorry.

omg

the fact that your doctor interrupted you and wouldn't listen to your concerns is incredibly rude, unprofessional, and irresponsible of him. that alone is reason enough to...

please go in person to a different doctor and get a second opinion!

your concerns are *absolutely* valid and i am SO glad you asked this question!!

in the meantime, while you're waiting for your appt, drink:

1) PLENTY of water (esp. in the heat, b/c you're already perspiring more than usual!). flushing your system constantly is CRITICAL. at least 8-10 glasses of water daily. you should be peeing at least every 15-20 minutes.

2) UNSWEETENED cranberry juice -- make sure you read the ingredients and see that no sugar is added.

unsweetened cranberry juice can be hard to find. you can buy it at Whole Foods, but i think it's cheaper at Trader Joe's.

also minimize your sugar intake as much as possible, which includes fruits and fruit juices; bacteria feed on sugar (even the sugar from fruit!) and it will worsen and/or prolong the infection.

good for you for being an excellent mother even before the baby is born... and for going with your gut when faced with an unprofessional physician.

good luck to you, and i hope this helps!
