I'd give him a medal, I laughed so hard I fell off the sofa. Highlight of the world cup.
The Tournament itself was so dull the headbutt was the only bit worth watching.
Plus the bloke deserved it. If I'd been given a red card for a headbutt I'd have asked if I could go back and finish the job tbh. A yellow card perhaps, since it didn't affect play, the ball was at the other end of the pitch.

In the name of good sportsmanship..yes. I don't blame him for wanting to defend his mom and sister's honor but there's a time and a place for everything. This was very uncharacteristic of Zidane so it must have been quite an insult but he still shouldn't have knocked the guy down. The World Cup is all about good will and good sportsmanship so the red card was well deserved.

Yeah he couldn't have deserved it more and the 3 days community service he got! but the Italian should get a stonking big ban for inciting him, lip reader's know exactly what he said and this type of thing can't be tolerated either as it is taking the sportsmanship out of football! I'm involved in a couple of other sports and these incident's never happen at any level! Football ref's need to get allot tougher!

Yes. In the 110th minute of the World Cup final against Italy, Zidane was sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the chest in an off the ball incident. Video replays showed Materazzi holding Zidane and pulling his shirt lightly after Italy had captured the ball in an attack by the French team. Materazzi let go and the two players exchanged words before Zidane began to walk away from him. Materazzi then spoke to Zidane, who turned around, stepped toward and head-butted Materazzi in the chest, sending him to the ground. Although play was halted, referee Horacio Elizondo did not appear to have seen the confrontation. After the fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo indicated what he had seen to the other referees, Zidane was shown the red card and sent off.
On 11 July 2006, FIFA announced plans to open a disciplinary investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. It also affirmed the legality of referee Horacio Elizondo's decision to send Zidane off, rejecting claims that fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo had relied on video transmission before informing Elizondo about Zidane's misconduct, which would have been illegal. Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that FIFA president Joseph Blatter had mentioned the possibility of Zidane being stripped of the Golden Ball award.
FIFA also opened disciplinary proceedings against Materazzi on 13 July 2006 in light of Zidane's statement about having been repeatedly provoked by prior to the incident. As part of the investigation, both players were summoned to attend a face-to-face hearing before the Committee.
On 20 July 2006, FIFA concluded its hearings and handed down punishments against both Zidane and Materazzi. Zidane received a three-game match ban and a CHF7500 fine, while Materazzi was issued a CHF5000 fine and a two-match ban. In light of Zidane's retirement from football, he will serve three days community service on FIFA's behalf. FIFA further addressed the insult in question by saying: "In their statements, both players stressed that Materazzi's comments had been defamatory but not of a racist nature."
I think that justice has been done but I might not be able to persuade a French fan of that.

No, in soccer no one seems at replays. despite the Ref says is going. He may even nonetheless, seek advice from the different 2 officals (the line men) and ask them. and that they are able to propose him on the call to make. it relatively is what occurred the former day. The ref requested the lineman what occurred, and he instructed him to grant Zidan the pink.

If you assault another player off the ball, you get a red card. That's the rule. There's nothing in the rules about it being OK if he's insulted your mother.
