Until recently, I had not thought of cheering as a sport but on reflection, I think that it is.

A sport consists of a physical and mentally competitive activity carried out with a recreational purpose for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of a skill, or some combination of these. A sport has physical activity, competition, self-motivation and a scoring system. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess. Cheering qualifies as a sport under these criteria.

Cheering has elements of gymnastics and dance and has organised competitions. There have been organised cheering competitions since the 1990s with the USASF World Cheerleding championships starting in 2004.

US teams have won the vast majority of the medals, but an increasing number of strong teams from around the globe have come to compete in the event in recent years. This competition has grown in popularity and prestige since its beginning as a small competition in 2004. In 2006, over 100 teams from 11 different countries competed in the event.

So give us an S-P-O-R-T. What do they spell? Sport by any criteria.

Youre right, cheering does take more than people realize, but it cant be considered a sport. A sport must have strict rules and guidelines for competitive play. Cheerleading is more of an activity, not a sport.

Yes, very much so. I've been cheering since I was 7 and did gymnastics before. It is a bunch of sports put together to create one complex one. Your mentality and physical conditions play a big part. You need muscle to hold people in the air while they bend and spin. You also need to be able to have the right tequnigue to tumble (flip) and not just cartwheels and backhandspring. As of right now, I'm 13 and I can do fulls, whips tucks etc

Competitive cheering is certainly sport. It's not just shaking pom poms and looking cute. Many younger top level gymnast go into cheering. You need to be strong and in great shape. Also, many cheerleaders get similar injuries as football, baseball...players.

Yes it is. I was a cheerleader too, and it requires a lot of physical strength. Specially stunting for spotters and bases. And did you know that anually, there are more injuries in Cheerleading than Football, Baseball, and Basketball put together. Because so many fall while stunting.

No, honey, it's not a sport, it's a hobby. It's a silly little hobby with silly little girls in silly little outfits, and the only people who really like them are the old men who buy the catalogues to look at the legs of the little girls in them.....and the old men who come to the competitions and the games, to watch the girls with binoculars.
