I had a pond goldfish that makes me really question the memory for a goldfish! Everyday when it was feeding time, before I even walked outside I would peek at the pond through the window and sure enough he would be swimming like crazy around the same time everyday! And when I walked outside he would follow me around the fish pond because he knew! Now if a fish really has a small memory how did he know everyday at the same time to swim at top of water because dinner is coming? :)

It's amazing how that idea became a piece of Universal Consciousness. It was a joke in the comedy routine of Craig Ferguson back in the days when he was still calling himself Bing Hitler.

He made it up. It's not true.

Actually there might be a bit of dispute about that because Jerry Sadowitz claimed Craig nicked a lot of his material from his act (which is true). The Goldfish joke is a bit tame for Jerry Sadowitz, though. Anything you can perform on television is a bit tame for Jerry Sadowitz.

No, its not true.

If you've ever had a goldfish, you would notice that after a while it will start to come to the top ofthe tank for food whenever it sees you approaching.

This is a conditioned response. They learn that when they see you coming, they get fed.

In order to learn they have to be able to remember, If they forgot everything every 8 seconds, they could not learn to associate you with food

~Good question. Did they stand there with a stop watch waving a bit of plastic greenery until the goldfish looked away? Is that how you could define an attention span? It would explain some of my students.

I don't think it's true. Because just like Koi, Goldfish can regconize the person who feeds it. It can also remember the place and time of the day when it usually gets fed. That's why Goldfish and Koi are very easy to tame.
