Those clogged ducts are VERY uncomfortable. I'm sure you already know this, but the best thing to do is nurse, nurse, nurse. There are some home remedies that can help with the pain, but if it isn't cleared up and you develop a fever, it's possible that the clogged duct has become mastitis and might need antibiotics to clear it up. It is important to rest as much as you can. Many women find that spending a day or two in bed and letting baby nurse as much as he/she wants clear up a plugged duct.
For pain, you can try alternating warm and cold compresses; massaging the tender spot while standing in a warm shower. and (I know this sounds kooky but I swear it works), you can refrigerate cabbage leaves and put them on the tender spot. Cabbage leaves also help with engorgement.
As for the Vicodin, I was prescribed that after having surgery, and I was breastfeeding at the time. It's rated as a class B, meaning that there are no known harmful effects.
Anytime I have questions about meds and bf'ing, I check out Kellymom.com. The generic name for Vicodin is hydrocodone. If you follow the link, scroll down and you'll find it hydrocodone listed.
good luck, I do hope it clears up soon!

Hi,
I am with the Nursing Mothers Council and you should nurse during blocked ducts and Mastitis. You can take Advil or Motrin to ease the inflammation, take a warm shower before nursing a few times a day if you can to open the ducts up, place the baby in different nursing positions so he/she comes in at different angles to clear different parts of the breast. You can also take Soy Lethitin (Spelling) it is in a pill you can get at the store or heath food stores. Take two per day and that keep the milk flowing. You can also massage the area while the baby in nursing to help loosen things up.
Let us know how it goes, see a doctor or Lactation Consultant if you feel sick and have a fever.

Between my two, I experience both at one time or another. Loratabs and Vicatian are the same, both are fairly safe. The clogged duct went away on it's own, just keep nursing. The mastitis needed an antibiotic to cure it, keflex in my case. If you think you have either of these, call your ob. Only a doc can prescribe pills and know what's really wrong.

I had a serious breast infectionwith one of my kids. A friend literally thought I was dying!! I had no problem nursing despite the pain because I wanted it to *go away*!!
Lortab is the same drug as Vicodin (hydrocodone plus acetaminophen), if that's the 2 you are asking about (you spelled both wrong). How safe either one is depends on the dosage, the frequency, the length of time you will be using it, and the age of the baby. I am including a link to the Web site of Dr. Thomas Hale, the world expert on drugs and breastfeeding. There are a number of questions and answers on this page; hopefully something there will answer your question better than I could without more information.

Lortab and Vicodin are different names for the same drug.
YES...you can take both while nursing. They are rated "L3" by Thomas Hale in his book "Medications & Mothers' Milk" which means "moderately safe." Doses of 5 mg every 4 hours or more has a minimal effect on nursing infants, particuarly if they are older. Observe very young babies for sedation or constipation.
You should talk to your doctor about an antibiotic for the mastitis if it is bad. (See links below.) Also, if you go on an antibiotic then BOTH you and baby should take probiotics (acidophilus) to prevent thrush.
You can also cut raw garlic cloves up into pill-sized pieces and swallow them. It is GREAT for fighting infection. You should also be taking vitamin C and drinking plenty of fluids. Nurse frequently.
If you have a plugged duct, be sure to vary nursing position on that breast to empty all the milk ducts. You can use heat and massage to try to help break up the plugged area. Massage in a hot shower works very well.

i've had multiple clogged duct the best thing to do is let your baby nurse the clog out if you can handle the pain. And take a motrin. Some times putting a warm towel or cold towel on them can help but mostly you need to wait til your baby sucks the clog out

The best thing to do is to breastfeed your baby! That's the surest way to resolve that. It'll hurt but it'll clear up soon enough if you continue to feed your baby from that breast as much as you feed him/her from the other breast.
To prevent this try to feed consistently from both breasts. I'm sure the dr. and nurses have told you this already. My baby tended to prefer one breast over the other but when he's hungry enough he'll take it where ever the milk was pouring... :-)
Good luck and congrads and trust me, breastfeeding will become the most natural and easiest thing in the world to you before long...

I had mastitis. I had a horrific fever of 105 and puked like crazy. You need to get on a strong antibiotic and you can only take tylenol if your still breast feeding. The more you breast feed the quicker the infection leaves. Sorry you feel so bad.
