no real quick & short exists, but if you must:
lebanon has allowed a terrorist group called Hezbollah to exist (by not disarming them)... this group has been firing rockets at civilians in Israel, but the story goes back to another war (Hezbollah was created when Israel occupied Lebanon, but has carried on the fight even though Israel left) Israel is responding to these attacks by bombing Lebanon to destroy Hezbollah and persuade Lebanon to reign in this terrorist group.
ps. Hezbollah is funded and given weapons by Iran... some believe they had Hezbollah attack civilians and capture the Israeli soldiers to deflect attention away from Iran's nuclear program

Israel was created through the confiscation of Arab lands. Since 1948 it has conquered even more land. The Palestinians are the main victims. The rest of the Arabs are mad at Israel (and in part the U.S. for what they see as blind support for Israel) and view Israel as a threat. In the latest flare up in this long running dispute Hezbollah captured 2 Israeli soldiers in an attempt to use them as bargaining chips to do a prisoner exchange. Israel holds more than 9,000 Palestinian prisoners including children. Hizbollah did not calculate that Israel would then go in an bomb Beirut into obliteration and in the process kill hundres of innocent Lebanese. This is a simple explanation of the truth.

mmm briefly? WAR
Hezbollah kidnapped two israeli soldiers from the borders between lebanon and israel
and they wanted back two lebanese soldiers of Hezbollah captured in 1975
Hezbollah are the supporters of the palestinians and they stand with them in the south of lebanon for a long time claiming to protect the south from the israeli
after the sequestration of Syria from lebanon the supporters of Syria in lebanon wanted to provoke any kind of war to avoid having their weapons removed (1559)
The fact is Lebanese does not want war but they were forced to live under the bombarding of the israeli because of a terrorist parti called Hezbollah (supported by Iran Syria the Palestinians and the Chiites muslims)

Israel has a long term plan for Lebanon, the POW was not the real reason. Think of it just like the US has a long term plan for Iraq, the Weapons of Mass Destructions was not the real reason.
So what is Israel's long term plan for Lebanon, you may ask? Divide and conquer, and then keep some for yourself. Then pressure Syria to full surrender...or diplomatically called a "peace" agreement.

The first point to bear in mind is that the crisis did not truly
begin with the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. The
kidnappings presented a serious problem for Israel, but could not, by themselves, define the geopolitical issue. That definition came when Hezbollah rockets struck Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, on July 13. There were also claims coming from Hezbollah, and confirmed by Israeli officials, that Hezbollah had missiles available that could reach Tel Aviv. Israel's population is concentrated in the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem corridor and in the Tel Aviv-Haifa corridor. In effect, Hezbollah had attained the ability to strike at the Israeli heartland. Hezbollah has been hitting the northern part of this heartland, as well as pounding Israel's northern frontier.
Formerly, Syria had troops in Lebanon. When Syria withdrew its troops Hezbollah could operate freely.
Hezbollah are Shiite Muslims as are most Lebanese, Syrians, Iraqis, Iranians and some Yemenis, Pakistanis and Bahrainians. Diplomatic efforts are aimed at getting the Sunni Muslim countries to negotiate. This includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
Israel has sent special forces troops into Lebanon to ferret out strongholds and weapons. Many of these are located in tunnels. Israel may send tanks. On Beirut Al-Manar TV Lebanese President Emile Lahhud expressed his support for Hezbollah leader, Al-Sayyid [Hasan] Nasrallah. It seems likely that the Lebanese will commit their army to assist Hezbollah against Israel.
Hezbollah has indicated that it will bombard Tel-Aviv, Israel with 500 missiles. So far, Hezbollah has used Kassam and Ketuysha rockets. It has not used the Zelzal or Fajr missiles, yet which have longer range. Israel is committed to ferreting out the missiles and destroying them. This will be costly to both sides in casualties.
It seems that Hezbollah wants to maximize civilian casualties on both sides. Hezbollah and Hamas, by contrast, deliberately operate military wings out of densely populated areas. They launch antipersonnel missiles with ball-bearing shrapnel, designed by Syria and Iran to maximize civilian casualties.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said on MEMRI TV the volcano of rage of the people in the region is on the brink of eruption...it will not be limited to this region.
Beginning early this morning, July 21st 2006, IDF ground forces are operating in the area of the Karni crossing in the northern Gaza Strip. In a military engagement just over the border of Lebanon Israeli soldiers of the Egoz regiment discovered one of the many fortified bunkers holding the large arsenal of missiles currently raining upon Israeli towns in the North. The United Nations has called for a ceasefire and wishes to oversee
the peace.
