Some men do, but the obvious connection to a man who designed and instigated one of the worst attrocities in recent memory is a lot to work against.

It was a fairly bizarre-looking style even in Hitler's day. People would have laughed, but you don't tell a crazy despot his mustache looks stupid.

Bad connotations, probably. And it was such a distinctive mustache. Had he maintained less distinguishing facial hair (a lip-to-lip, average mustache), it seems unlikely that it would have become shorthand for everything evil.
