Hamsters come from cold climates like Russia. They live mostly solitary lives deep in their burrows, only coming out to stash a bunch of food in thier cheeks and to mate. The males go around looking for females in heat, mate, and then get the heck out of there. If the female is not in heat or if it stumbles across another male, they fight until the loser goes away. Their babies are weaned in 3-4 weeks and are kicked out to live their own solitary lives. They are more likely to defend themselves by biting than gerbils, but if handeled from baby on can be pretty nice pets.

Gerbils live where it's warm and dry (Mongolia) and live in social groups. Many females live together in burrows, but once the males are weaned, only select few get to stay and breed the females and the rest are kicked out to live solitary or make a new family. Although more social than hamsters, males and unrelated female stuck in a cage together can fight to the death. They are more active and are bigger chewers than hamsters. Plastic cages just do not work for them. In general, they bite less often than hamsters, but are too active to enjoy sitting still in a hand for too long.

Gerbils look more like mice... usually brown in colouring, have long tails and they can be held but are usually not as docile as hamsters. hamsters are fury and can have lots of colour variations. they don't mind being handled as much. hamsters are usually plumper and have short stubby tails so they look cuter. Both twitter, squeek, scratch around and run around at night. Both need good clean habitats. And don't forget, both breed like crazy!
