As you already know was the atom always here.
The first atom splitting was done from Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in the year 1938. They bombarded Uranium with Neutrons and splitted in this way the first time in history Atoms.
They realised immidiatly what power a chain reaction could be.
The idea to an Atomic bomb came from Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner who was working in germany in an Institute in Berlin. Lise Meitner had to flee and continued in Sweden her work.
Albert Einstein later wrote an Letter to the american president about the atoms and that was the main reason that the Manhattan project started. In this project was the first nuclear bomb built and exploded in New Mexico in a desert some weeks befoe the USA used the first Atomic Bomb in an war against Hiroshima.
there exist a very good documentary about it in the internet.

If the atom was 'invented' it would have been by God.
Albert Einstein did not discover, or split, the atom. His theories were important in the development of nuclear power, but he was a theorist more than an engineer.
I believe the idea of the atom is generally credited to Democritus, though Aristotle was more famous, and expounded further on that theory as compared to the more popular theory of how matter was formed at that time.
Ernest Rutherford was the first person to use experiments to specifically determine the makeup of atoms, although Faraday and John Dalton had made some progress by carefully observing chemical and electrical interactions.
So, to sum up, the concept of atoms has been around since the ancient Greeks, but we were unable to determine the accuracy of said theories until fairly recently when we were able to do experiments using elementary particles and observe the interactions.

You have to go back about 2500 years to natural philosophy, atomism, taught by Democritus and and Leucippus. Both introduced a theory that all the objects in the universe are composed of very small, indestructible elements called atoms. Buddhist atomists Dharmakirti and DignÄga came up with similar theories during this time.

The Greeks and Indians thought up of atoms on a more philosophical level, as the field of science wasn't yet created.
But John Dalton in the 19th century first developed a scientific theory to explain why substances broke down proportionally.
