I never heard how all those people that stayed there affected the cities economy, job market, social services and tax rates etc. Did it stress out the residents or what?

I live in Houston. The stress of Katrina greatly impacted all aspects of life in Houston. Schools are suffering from over-crowding. The Dept. of Social Services is back-logged and stretched beyond the limit. Search for Jobs has become much more competitive. Tensions in schools have resulted in riots and fights, etc. Inexpensive housing is no longer available.

The federal government has provided some aide to Houston Schools, Police force and Welfare Dept. but, as always, it is never enough. Thus far, most of the evacuees are not home owners so they are not paying the taxes.

On the brighter side, I still see lots of organizations pitching in to help. Clothing, food, household items, etc. are still being distributed. Organizations are looking for ways to assimilate the new-comers to the area.

H E L L YESSSSSSS it stressed the Houstonians out, because at first we were given them everything free, food, housing, clothing, hair services at salons and schools, even inviting them into our homes,strangers..and most, not all, had the audacity to be rude, not liking the food, clothes, etc.. just B I T C H I N G about everything! Crime rate is sooo high.. New Orleans was said to be the no.1 murder capital of the world, guess who took it's place! The celebrities have not a clue as to the tribulations that Houstonians are facing, they only saw the people at the time of the flood, not the after effects of their behavior in Houston, Dallas and surrounding cities..they should've asked the residents of that city about the ungratefulness, and crimes...I could go on, and on..I'm not saying that ALL evacuees are like that..oh just about 99.99999%of them!

THe crime rate went up 30% theres a new bill to raise the tax base to pay for the old schools that had to be reopened and public housing is maxed out.
Still it's a better safer place than they came from and most will not go back.

As a community Houstonian i'm able to purely inform you the information. After Katrina the point of violent crime in Houston shot up and the homicide cost doubled. truly many New Orleans gangs wanting to pickup their turf warfare in Houston. Dose that advise that Katrina sufferers are unemployed gangsters? No, of route not. inspite of the actuality that what i will inform you inspite of the actuality that is those that were unemployed in New Orleans are for some "unusual" reason nevertheless unemployed in Houston. even as those that did have jobs were able to discover them right here. we do not resent people from New Orleans coming to Houston and looking out a sparkling domicile and a sparkling job. What we do resent is even as New Orleans makes a decision to unload its human "garbage" on our doorstep and assume us to address it.

I know crime went up, I can say from first hand experience that the 911 system has been stretched and abused to its fullest potential.
