I've known of women who smoked weed while pregnant with no birth defects or developmental delays. I smoked while pregnant with my 2nd. She's very smart and so are the kids of the women I know who smoked while pregnant. Even with this information, I'm sure it has to be somewhat harmful. It really messes up a person's memory and often ambition. I know it has affected me in many ways. I've been clean 4 years (with a slip this past year, but clean again) and don't suggest it even without evidence of harm to the baby. As far as making it legal, I don't know unless it is because it clouds thinking and decreases memory.

OK well unlike most of the above people I am actually speaking from personal experience. I smoked weed throughout both of my pregnancies and I was completely open about it with both my GP and my midwife. Both these health professionals told me that there is actually no documented evidence that using cannabis can harm an unborn baby, in fact the midwife told me that it can be very helpful in alleviating morning sickness. I was told that tobacco on the other hand very definately can cause damage to a baby. My first daughter was born at a healthy weight in slightly over an hour. She is now a healthy happy seven year old who is classed as academically gifted with a reading age of 13. She has a great immune system and has only had 4 days off school sick in 4 years. Whilst pregnant with my second daughter I took part in a nationwide study in to the effects of cannabis on unborn and newborn babies. She was born in 40 minutes, at the same weight as my first, again no health problems and is now a very bright 3 year old who is also very seldom ill. Neither of them suffer from ADHD or ADD or any of the other things that have been mentioned here. You must make your own choices based on fact not hysteria and propaganda. Good luck.

i wish i didn't have to be telling you this in a ridiculous list on Yahoo Answers, so that my reply would blend in with a million other replies, and could easily be ignored or overlooked or forgotten. wish i could explain it to you in person so you'd really understand. but this is the forum, so here goes.
this has nothing to do with your personal rights; it's about the health of the baby. just because pot is "natural," it doesn't mean it's safe for a growing fetus to ingest. it is extremely dangerous -- basically you're damaging the development of your baby's organs, including his/her brain. if there is ANY chance you're pregnant, you absolutely MUST STOP smoking (and drinking, if you drink at all) immediately and go get a pregnancy test or see your doctor.
the fact that you've been smoking for years is an entirely separate issue, and you need to understand that. this honestly isn't meant to be scolding; it's not about rights or laws or politics or "natural" substances or any of that.
it is, very simply, dangerous for the child.
please stop immediately. it *is* a big deal: you're changing the outcome of the child's life even before it's had a chance to begin. to help give it some perspective, given all this information, would you have wanted your mother to smoke pot (or anything else) while you were developing inside her womb?
the placenta is your baby's only way to access nutrients and oxygen; even a small amount of substance can do a great deal of harm.
if you'd like to talk some more or need specific information, please feel free to email me.

they won't make it legal because back in the 30's the government had to choose the lesser of two evils so they legalized alcohol instead....now they make so much money off tickets and trafficking they wouldn't ever give that up...
Anyway...about the baby.....you really do need to quit smoking it while you are pregnant, as yes it could harm the baby... you have to remember that anytime you smoke anything that smoke is replacing oxygen in your system, and so that is also passed to the baby. I know it'll be hard at first to quit while you're pregnant..but keep reminding yourself how much you want a healthy baby.
Good luck!

Assuming you are not smoking an 1/8 a day or something, then it isn't going to be MORE harmful than ciggarettes. Less actually. I was with my friend in CO & her obgyn actually told her to smoke weed again during her 3rd trimester. Bcuz she wasn't gaining any weight & had nausea a LOT. Well, obviously smoking anything isn't healthy, but marijuiana does have health benefits. Good luck sweetie & I hope you have a cute healthy baby in a few/several months.

Any substance that you take into your body can affect your baby. The placenta that provides the baby with all the nutrients it needs carries everything you take in across to the baby. You have the right to choose to smoke, your baby doesn't... don't risk causing your child irreversible harm by smoking pot or anything else for that matter while you are still pregnant.

For sure. What ever you put in to your body you are putting in the baby's body. You don't want to get the unborn baby stoned?
Be healthy until you give birth, remember unborn baby's cant make choices for them self that is why you are THE MOTHER. So take care of your self that way you have a healthy baby. If the baby comes out with problems you will regret it all your life.
You can have a glass of vine if you want to get a little happy.
Here go see their and educate your self

smoking pot while your pregnant can harm your unborn child, there are a series of birth defects that a child could be born with which are similar to fetal alcohol syndrome. Smoking weed for prolonged periods of time damages your lungs and diminishes your brain cells.

Yes! Your smoking "weed" is hurting you and your unborn child. Once a brain cell dies it is gone forever...we are born with all the brain cells we are gonna get...so just think about what you are robbing your child of. Not to mention the potential birth defects he or she can be born with...visibly disfiguring ones or those that develop as they grow older, learning disabilities...respiratory damage like asthma.
