1. Turn off unnecesary startup programs
2. Turn off unnecesary service (Windows 2000 and Xp)
3. Defrag once a month (depend on usage)

You can use these application to improve PC Performace.
1. TuneUp Utilities
2. Tweak Xp (Windows Xp only)
3. BootVis (Freeware for Windows Xp for a faster startup)
4. Norton Utilities (For error corection and improves PC performance)

Other are not very good but still handy to be use:

it depends upon the applications u r running and how many of them are being run simultaneously. agreed u have a good configuration but its still a machine, dont flog it so so much. also check where u have positioned ur pc. it needs a lot of ventilation, all AMD processor based pc do. remove all high settings when u are to run a high-end software. also remove the unwanted stuff that starts up during startup. also get a good anti-virus and scan ur pc. it could have a virus too. it can come from cds, mail or anywhere. all the very best. dont use the dsk defrag too much. it could spoil ur hard disk. use it sparingly.

Yes, to start with, delete all of you cookies and temporary Internet files, do a system defrag, and download a free 30 trial of System Mechanic and have it do a total system analysis.. it really helped my computed to run much more quickly and efficient.
Also, if you don't have a virus and spyware remover, you should get one of those too... Microsoft has a free spyware removal program.

Do the spyware/adware/antivirus programs. If that does not help I would just reinstall Windows and keep your computer clean after that. You could also test your memory.

Add memory and ensure adequate cooling are the first things that come to mind.
