I raise guppies and sell them for a little extra cash. I would have two ten gallon tanks. One for the adults and one for the fry. There should be 3 females for every male. If you don't want them to breed out of control I would get a divider to separate the males from the females. They can have to 40+ babies sometimes. Just warning you now lol. Any plants work fine as long as the babies have enough to hide in when they are born. Doesn't matter if they are plastic plants. Catfish work well with guppies because they stay be the bottom and ghost shrimp work well with cleaning the tank too. I would get an air filter for sure for the babies. So that way they wont get sucked up. Good luck.

Go to the fish store, Someone who works there should be able to help you out... I LOVE guppies But do NOT feed them more than twice a day and a little bit, they will over eat and DIE if you feed them too much. Plastic plants are fine, WASH everything in boiling salt water before you put it in the tank. It wont melt. Get pcostemus cleaner fish, they are friendly- a one gallon tank can have about 3 guppies/ so use that as a tip. so if you have a 5 gallon tank, you could get 15 guppies. Id go with a 5-10 gallon for starters. Good luck!

First in a well established tank you can breed guppies forever. But mark my words the bigger the tank the easier it is to take care of guppies. If you want to breed guppies your best bet is to buy a 20 gallon tank with a divider in the middle. Two seperate ten gallon filters on each side of the divider. Then keep your males seperated from the females. When you want to breed your perfect female to the perfect male get you a ten gallon tank with two males for every female. But you have to watch them make love. When they are done after a couple of hours. Seperate the females from the males. Keep those two pregnant females seperate. Keep them in a breeder box and feed them well. thats breeding guppies. make sure you have full blooded guppies not the ones that you get from a pet store. a female guppy should be clear in color. no color whatsoever. the male dorsel fin should be as long as the width of the tail fin. and the male should be for pure blood one color period. the fry from that male and the clear female should be a pure bred guppy. Keep the first fry and pick the best out of that fry. If you come out with fry that has different color get rid of them. keep only the fry that are true to the male color. You should have no problem then. Plastic plants are ok to start with, you still need to have a well established tank to raise guppies, guppies are very sensitive fish they will die really quick if you dont know what you are doing. YOur best bet to buy a tank is from Walmart but you will have to upgrade the filter system if you do that. It all depends on what kind of fish you want. If you are looking for a cheap buy go to walmart . B ut beware manufacturers do not give you what you need. So if you dont know what you are doing ask someone at a local pet store and also make sure they know what a biological cycle is. If they do not know, dont talk to them period. they dont know what they are talking about then.

I've bred guppies for years, and can tell you, you need a book. There is too much information to type here. Your questions are good, but not all you need to know to breed healthy fishies.
Books also have to be fact checked so you know that the information is accurate. Not always the case on the internet.
I shop at a small local fish store. The staff is more knowledgable and you make contacts to sell your babies to when the time comes. Look in the yellow pages for a tropical fish store near you.
Employees at large stores (Petco, Petsmart, Walmart) are idiots who don't know anything about animals. I accidently killed an entire tank of fish by following a Petsmart employee's advise.
Good Luck, from a fellow Guppy fan.

I had a guppie tank for 6 or 7 years and I loved it! I bred guppies. It was a 10 gallon tank. I started off with 3 females and 3 males and they multiplied until I had so many guppies, they would be having babies like once a month. I only had one of those fish that cleans the algae off of the glass and the floor. I would sell my guppies to PetsMart and Petco. Yes, plastic plants are ok. It doesn't matter where you get your tank as long as it's clean and devoid of any cracks.

start with a small tank, like 10 gallons. Buy 2 females, and 3 males. I like real plants, because they help with the oxygen, and grow to harbor the babies. You don't need a breeder net if you have the plants. Any bottom feeder, just 1, will help, but not necessary at first. You will need to condition the water when you first set it up, so ask at the pet store

The minimum tank size required for guppies is 20 gallons. Since guppies reach a maximum size of 2", you can have as many as you want as long as you don't overcrowd the tank. Guppies prefer a planted aquarium with Java Ferns and Java Moss. As for scavengers, I would recommend a Plecostomus or Ghost Shrimp. Check out www.drsfostersmith.com for breeding and nursery containers. I would not recommend plastic plants. Chances are they can harm the guppy's body and possibly fins. I would go with "silk" plants instead.

I have a 10 gallon guppy tank. I have about 7 adults. You should get more females than males. They mate alot and if 1 is prego than the other males can leave her alone and go get the other females prego. The babies(fry) are so cute. I have about 10 fry in my tank. They do mate alot, but sometimes they don't. I don't put the moms in a seperate tank when they are pregnant. That stresses the moms out and alot of times, they die and the babies. Get alot of plants. I have all fake and they work fine. The fry can hide out in there. They are fast buggers and art around. They can escape. Some don't of course. I love my tank and I love it when they have babies. It's very interesting! Good luck!

About 10 gallons. The tank will have everything you need. I would suggest buying one from petsmart or petco. Plastic plants and ornaments are fine. you do not need a big net for guppies. you might want to buy an alge eater to help keep your tank clean.
