I've had a temporary custody order of my sis's kids for 5yrs. There were no support orders, nor any visistation provisions in it. She's never helped financially, and doesn't have contact with them anymore. (she gave up on visitation when I asked for support) Is there a way to get any help or support now or in future? The father is in and out of prison in another state.

Hi,

Sounds like you are not going to get anything. Even if the court ordered support, it does not sound like the parents have anything. "Can't get blood out of a turnip"! Even if it is court ordered.

You may be better off trying for State Aid, depents on you income.

Even if you don't get any money from the parents the most important thing is the children are in a safe home with a family that loves them. Money may be tight but if you have made it this far then just keep up the good work and love those babies!

i'm no lawyer, but i think support can be ammended. the reason i say this is my wife divorced her first husband 12 years ago. he gave a sob story to the judge and he set the support at $50 a week for all three children..not each, for all.

the judge ordered a review to increase the support but it was never done in 12 years. now we have 3 children of our own and 8 people in our house living on one income...plus another income here and there.

$50 a week barely pays for their lunch money and they are all teens who have to go to the mall, movies, etc. and two are getting read to drive and he doesn't pay much at all....an occassional extra $100.

Good luck and God Bless
