It means you don't get any benefits. You only get paid for work that you complete to the satisfaction of the person who pays you. They can reject your work for little or no reason and leave you holding the expenses for anything you had to buy in the way of materials. If you are not familiar with this type of work, you should not get involved in it. Unless you are a professional, contract labor is a scam.

it means the person is not having a permanent job but a contract for a particular period. the "on contract" person cannot have pension and other benefits of the person who has a permanent job

you don't get the benefits of a full time employee, it's just work that is contracted out to other companies so that the company requesting the contract work can focus on other things.

It can mean several things, take your pick:

1. employer wants to hire at piece rate (output based) or hourly rate.
2. Employer is willing to pay a small retainer in exchange for having you on call.
3. Employer is willing to put your name as his preferred contractor, but you still have to bid and win each job.

Contract hires do not generally get any benefits or bonus.
