A small motor with an offset weight at the end of the shaft is mounted inside your phone.
When a call or text message arrives, isntead of a ringer, the motor spins and the offbalanced weight makes a vibration.
Like an unbalanced washer in spin mode.... only much smaller.

Inside the control unit (on the right hand side in the above image) is a small DC motor which drives this gear:

You can see that, attached to the gear, there is a small weight. This weight is about the size of a stack of 5 U.S. nickels, and it is mounted off-center on the gear. When the motor spins the gear/weight combination (at 100 to 150 RPM), the off-center mounting causes a strong vibration. Inside a cell phone or pager there is the same sort of mechanism in a much smaller version.

a small electromagnet ( motor) is activated when the ringer triggers it ( set to vibrate)

a even loaded motor gives a smooth spin, a uneven loaded motor causes a sensation of vibration - similar to an
electric or battery operated toothbrush

if still --lost then open your phone & verify ( use a old phone)

It's actually mechanical. There is a tiny motor with an off-center weight on the shaft. When the shaft turns, the little weight causes a vibrating sensation.
