i would recommend getting a book on the basics or getting someone to teach you (show take a few hours) and then the best way to learn is by playing/practicing. go to yahoo or somewhere like that and just play and ask questions and hope that they will be nice enough to help you. if you have specific questions, feel free to send me an email, i've been playing for years.

for starters, 4 people (2 sets of partners - although there is 2 handed and 3 handed bridge as well) get 13 cards each, which are then arranged by suite accending (A, K, ... 3, 2) each picture card has a value. you start off by bidding (trying to predict how many tricks (a card from each player) you will take between you and your partner). the points:

Ace - 4 points
King - 3 points
Queen - 2 points
Jack - 1 points

and two of a suit - 1 point (aka singleton)
only one of a suit - 2 pts (aka doubleton)
zero of a suite - 3 points (aka void)

you need a min of 13 points to declare a bid, and only 6 points to respond to your partners bid (since he obvoiusly would have 13). and that is the basic basics. its a game of numbers, just remember to count.

This game is played with 4 people, 2 on each team. You sit in the North, South, East & West positions of a table. North & South are partners, East & West are partners.

Deal out all the cards -- 13 per player.

Each player assesses their cards and counts their points. Bidding begins. The player that wins the bid plays the hand and his partner is "dummy" meaning that that players cards go face up on the table and he does not play the hand.

There is way more to learn about Bridge, but that's it in a nutshell. Read Goren's bridge books for great info.
