Is your time zone set correctly? It's either that or the battery on your motherboard has gone bad. But, exactly 8 hours, my guess is time zone.

Well, it could be the CMOS battery, but I doubt it. Most BIOS will warn you if the CMOS battery level is low, and the batteries last a loooooooooooong time (I've got a machine that I use for a firewall that has the original battery and the machine is about 10 years old).

Anyhow, what I would do is this (and in this order):

Check your time zone settings. I know that you stated that it goes back 8 hours only every so often, but how often do you reboot your system? Is that when it happens?

Try to figure out if you installed any new software about the same time this happened. Especially if it's software you downloaded with P2P or IRC and with a keygen (ie, pirated software). I won't lecture about pirated software, but one of the risks of downloading from sources that you don't know is spyware and/or virus. If you did install some software that required a keygen and/or crack, then uninstall it and run a spyware/virus scan in Safe Mode.

Do you have software that keeps your system clock up to date (such as Atomic Clock Synch)? If so, make sure that your time zone is set correctly in the software. If you have it set to ping the Atomic Clock every so often and your time zone is set incorrectly, it will readjust your system clock to what it thinks is right.

Try a virus/spyware scan in Safe Mode.

Last thing I can think of is replacing the CMOS battery, although I really don't think that it will solve your problem (usually, when the CMOS battery is dead, your system will let you know and the BIOS will set your system DATE back as well as the time and it would happen EVERY time you reboot your system).

Sorry I couldn't help any more than this, but this is a strange one.
