Since you got your laptop OS installed and has only C drive in it, you need special software like 'partitionmagic' to split the partition without losing data. You need to get the software, install it, and do it by the options. Do it with the help of a professional only. Second option is:
backup your data to another harddrive or by burning CDs. Re-install the OS with as much partition you need, as you can specify it while installing (only if you have OS CD and Key with you)

You probably have the software you need already. It's called fdisk.exe. If you modify a disk partition you will have to seperately format each partition which means you will have to re-install your operating system and all other software.
If you don't know what your're doing I would strongly recommend you get a friend who has gone through the process for assistance.

ok when you install the drive you'll need to format the drive, and no you will not lose your files, once that's done you may need to partition your drive to have 2 drives.... and since it's a laptop, it's not that much harder to install, but keep in mind that because it's a laptop, everything is smaller, so you need to be careful as to how everything is placed...and have small fingers or plyers in case a screw drops...

imo u definitely want to use an app like partition magic or acronis disk director. you dont have to reformat the existing drive....you can shrink it and then add different size drives to the freespace created.....
