The Yankees are doing good this year.....the Red Sox are just doing better. Their starting pitching staff looks like it has hit a wall though and they need some new guys in there to shake up the rotation. A-Rod is making some clutch errors out there, but so what. Yankees fans SUCK!!!!!!!!!! Why in the hell would you boo your own guy when he is going through a 5 game hitting slump. BUNCH OF MORONS!!!!! I personally wouldn't care if the Yankees ever won a world series again. ungrateful, unappreciative fanbase is spoiled. They need to go through a huge slump like detroit, or boston, or chicago so that the fans understand what it's like to really lose. Then maybe they will appreciate the winning.

Because they are a team of mercenaries, hired to the highest bidder, so none of these guys have played together enought o form a cohesive unit. That and the fact that Steinbreen overpays marginal pitchers who have had one good season and by the time they get to the Yankees they go back to the .500 quality pitchers they used to be. That and the curse is now on their shoulders.

The Yankees are currently 55-38, which is a better record then they had last year at this point in time. And they won the AL East last year. Check your info!

You can count on one hand how many players on the starting roster in April that haven't suffered some sort of extended injury or illness. Considering how many set-backs that the Yankees have experienced this year, it's nothing short of a willful miracle that they've managed to stay alive in this competetive American League Eastern Division.

Injuries to Matsui,Sheffield,Cano,Pavano,Dotel. Bad pitching (#4&5 starters), bad middle relief pitching. The bottom of the order is weak and A-rod is a no-show. So basically it's up to Moose,Wang,Jeter,Damon and Mo(if he gets in the game) Randy Johnson is unpredictable.

Randy Johnson isn't on steroids anymore
A-Rod (aka: Nim-Rod) is the most over-rated player in history
Pitching staff is weak
Torre can't run a pitching staff w/o Stotlemeyer
too many injuries this season

2.5 games back isn't too shabby. They are also 5-2 since the All-star break also not too shabby. And last I saw they were 17 games over .500.
So in answer to your question, huh?

Because they were overrated at the start of the year and they've got injuries to Sheffield and Matsui. Torre constantly has to juggle up his team.
