I dont know if this is smoke-- but it sure looks like it. Smoke or steam. Anyhow-- If my A,.C. is turned on for a while-- after about 4 or hours or so it will turn off by itself. Yesterday-- it was on all night.. and then at the top( where the vents are) steam/smoke started coming out.

Is this bad?

Yes, something is not working properly. Call one of those HVAC companies to come out and give you a free estimate. They will tell you what is wrong and then you can call around to different companies to compare the costs of repair. It sounds to me like it is overheating and turning itself off. I wouldn't run it until you have the problem diagnosed. If the motor is overheating it could start a fire.

Where there's smoke, there's fire. If it smells like smoke, then you need it checked.

If it has no smell, then it is condensed water that has not made it out the drain and is being blown back out into the room. It is actually sort of a cold steam and quite visible, but it is nothing.

When in doubt call a pro and give him his $60 to have a look for you.

It's not good. Check the filter...if it's filthy, buy a new one and replace it. If you are smelling something burning though, it's time to make the call to get it repaired.
