Music question: how can you tell if you have perfect pitch?

I can't read music well, so if someone asks for an A, I can't do it, but I can sing the first note of any song that I know, and get it exactly right. Is that what perfect pitch means? If not, what, exactly, is it?

If you can do that, then you're golden. Find out what notes those songs start with and you'll be in even better shape. To my experience, it is also a bit more, though. For instance, I can play a C on the piano and you should be able to sing any other note off of that if you have perfect pitch.

It is possible that you do have perfect pitch, but you need more musical training in order to be able to name the notes. Everyone who has perfect pitch does not have musical training. They are usually born with it, and the first "trait" of this is usually being able to sing the first note of a song correctly. Only musical training and learning to read music will expose if true perfect pitch is guiding these experiences. Start trying to perfect your ear and see where it takes you!

I have it, and basically it means that if someone tells you to sing any note without a reference point, you can always get it right. You probably have relative pitch, which means you have a fairly good ear that can pick up on certain pitches and keys of songs, but you don't quite have perfect pitch.

Perfect pitch is being able to sing an A when asked to.

Perfect pitch means that you can sing any pitch without a prompt. As per your example, an A. You can match pitch perfectly, which is different than perfect pitch.

perfect pitch means that you can sing a specific note like a C without hearing it right before. If i told you to sing an A, and you could sing it for me right here without anyone playing it for you, then you'd have perfect pitch. One of my friends who has perfect pitch could tell when our chorus teacher transposed one of our a capella pieces from its original key of F to the key of F#.

If you know the notes on a piano, if you match that note you have perfect pitch. In high school my music teacher had an electric tuner that he used to tune our instruments. I occasionally sang into it and if the needle was dead center or close enough to the center then that was perfect pitch.

perfect pitch requires being able to hit a specific note on command. singing the first note on key is not the same thing.

What i do if i'm asked to give a specific note is I think of a song that starts with that tonic note...then i hum it to make sure i'm correct, then i sing it.
