It depends. After you get your undergraduate degree you can be hired on as an Analyst. You'll work for 2 years and can be optioned for a third. After that you'll either be hired on as an Associate or go back to B-School for 2 years.. After B-School you'll be hired as an Associate and if you are good, you should be promoted to VP in 3-5 years and if you are really good, you'll be promoted to Managing Director probably 3-5 years after being a VP. Throughout each stage you are an "investment banker" but, you'll have different responsibilities. In the earlier stages you'll be doing more financial modeling and pitchbooks. At the later stages you'll be dealing more with clients. So all in all you're looking at about 8-12 years to become an MD. As always there are exceptions.......

You can start a career in investment banking right out of college. But competition for investment banking jobs is very serious.
