everybody wants the best for free.
However it it worked why would people pay for anything else ?

Zone alarm has a decent version free for personal use.

There is a rule that you get what you pay for. it's not always but generally true and i would believe the best will not be free, but you can get pretty close and something that's perferctly suitable for a home user for free.

XP sp2 also comes with a firewall.
i found that running a firewall on the router allows me to be quite lax on my local home network. Zomealarm is much more granular in that it can allow or disallow access to some ports on an applicaiton basis. so it will let your email program use the email port but will not let any other program do it without your blessing, so it helps prevent a virus from using your computer to send mass emails. a hardware firewall cannot do that as it does not know which program uses which port but it will protect you from the outside quite well.

You are not going to get the best of anything for free. But if that is the route you choose to take then of the free products out there I'd suggest Zone Alarm first. It has the best in terms of GUI and is thus the most intuitive. The next would be from Sygate which I believe to be the better product if you were to buy the fully functional version.
