Its a bio-hazard...A needle is actually a hollow cannula and when it is inserted into the skin, it picks up blood that can contain viruses and disease, you wouldn't want someone to insert that into you after it was inserted into someone with a disease. needles are disposed in to a sharps box and are destroyed properly...
