What makes this a tough question, for me, is not that there are so many pop stars to debate about. The difficulty is more that there are so many styles to have to wade through to make even a personal selection.

To compare Stevie Ray Vaughn with Andres Segovia is absurd, not because of any snobby attitude about classical music, but that it would be unfair to expect Segovia to rock, or Stevie Ray to do a classical piece. Not that they couldn't, but each is a master of his style.

BB King may be king of the blues, but no one could do what Doc Watson does with bluegrass. Dick Dale invents the surfer style, but that doesn't lessen Les Paul's contribution to the industry.

For all-round skill, adaptability and entertainment potential, I vote for Roy Clark. (yes, the guy from Hee Haw)

Robert Johnson- Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who's ever heard of him. He was a major inspiration to Clapton.
Trey Anastasio is a good answer as well. Amazing.
I could also say Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, Clapton, or Duane Allman. All were exceptional.
"Best" is a matter of personal opinion, there are so many amazing guitarists that coud fit the bill.
