Or do you think that we will just always have these 50/50 splits throughout the country with extremely close elections?

Hard to say, because most of the time it's usually 50/50. Half of the country agrees with what the president does and half does not. I think it will be hard to find a candidate that can cross over political lines to win the full support of both parties.

We did in the recent past. President Clinton was very well-liked in his first term. He deserved it. He took the economy that was in the doldrums and gave the U.S. its best, most-sustained growth ever. The whole Lewinsky thing was a major letdown though.

I think that we will again in the future. We're split right now, no doubt. I think that's because the Republican party is doing the best they can to appeal to their core conservatives. (That's not meant to be a derisive comment. It's just that they're in power and they've got the right to use it.) I suspect that in this year's elections the Democrats will gain at least one house of Congress. That will move things more toward the middle and people will be less hateful.
In the '50s everything was about Republicans. Eisenhower was well loved. In the '30s and '40s FDR won four terms. It's just an ebb and flo. Sooner or later someone will come along that most people will think is great. Possibly John McCain. Possibly Barak Obama. It will happen. Time heals all wounds.

I see the 50/50 split for the next few years . At lest until , we get rid of these career politicians , that keep running year after year .
This country is divided on almost every thing and until there is someone that can bring us together again , we'll stay that way . We need to be united not divided , as we have been for the last 8 years .
