Giant beer cans in vending machines. Fireworks for sale (to anybody) at supermarkets and 7-11's. (Only kidding. Both are true, but not what makes the country unique). Clearly, every culture and country is unique. However, two of the stand-out characteristics in Japan are an incredibly high level of service and a sense of aesthetics/craftsmanship that permeates virtually all aspects of both high culture and everyday life. Still, its probably a mistake to generalize--each person probably has their own take/experience on what makes Japan unique. If you don't, the that's the perfect reason to go visit or live there and find out.
(While some of the other respondents have mentioned honesty and safety--which overall tends to be true--it can be over-estimated. My bicycle--which was locked up--was stolen from outside of my apartment. School-children were slaughtered and at least one foreign hostess killed and dismembered while I resided there. And I was friends of at least 2 Japanese women, and one foreign woman who were victims of domestic/sexual abuse. At the same time, one always did here stories of someone's wallet found and returned with all thier money still in it. Honor is highly valued in Japanese culture, so I guess that helps, but I think the truth of it is there are good and bad people everywhere.)

1)They have very little violence. You can leave a bicycle out for days and no one will steal it.
2)They have an honor system that surpasses any other in the world. This shows in their manufacturing which makes them the best at what they do. When we taught them how to make automobiles after WWII to help them recover economically, they took our ideas and made a superior product, refining it year after year until they surpassed us in automobile sales, bankrupting two of our largest companies in our largest manufacturing industry.
3) They have very little land and must look elsewhere to manufacture which makes them great diplomats. They need to be friendly with other industrial nations, such as the US, in order to use our land to build their automobiles and as a place to send their citizens to become educated.
4) Because of their island life, they live mainly on fish, which makes them extremely healthy and they live long lives. It's only when they consume a western diet that you see health concerns pop up.

Their language - I love to hear them talk. The food... awesome! It's so light, healthy and tasty. The fasion - they are not shy and willing to push the envelope, dare to be different. Their culture - they are so polite - perhaps a bit too polite and they are SO PUNCTUAL! It's admirable. Their train system runs like clockworks, it is always on time & on schedule, unlike ours. Their music - love it to bits even though i don't understand a whole lot of it. I just love Japan so much I wish I am living there. :)

Japan maybe like just one big community. 98-99% of the population is Japanese people (They don't call themselves as "race" basically.). No immigrant coutnry.
They can share similer feelings and excahge their ideas easily using Japanese.
And they like "automatic" things.
You know the taxi door open automatically in everywhere Japan.
