Puerto Rico is a latin american spanish speaking nation. They have refused to become a US state thru elections. They do not want to loose their national identity, culture and language like hawaiians did in Hawaii. Puerto Ricans are very proud of their olympic national team and of all their unique culture and national identity.
Also the US do not need or want a spanish speaking nation as a state, they already saw how french speaking Quebec wants independence from Canada. Puerto Rico as a state could threaten the union of states like Quebec is doing in Canada.

No, for the simple reason that it is not the wish of a clear majority of Puerto Rico's people. Statehood has traditionally been obtained in response to a petition or request from the people of a territory who which it to become a State; it is not imposed on a region arbitrarily.

no. i have one friend who is puerto rician and i get the impression from her that most people there do not want to be a state. And from the US point of view, I do not think that Puerto Rico would help the economy or have other benefits.

I think it should be a state. Granted the people of PR need to make this decision, and in the past it's been a close vote.
They people of PR have all the benefits of being a state. They get all the federal money for everything, welfare, food stamps infrastucture...everything. And they are not required to pay taxes.
Downside is they don't get to vote in federal elections(choose president and such).
I think that being able to get the goodies without having to put anything back into the kitty is why they keep choosing to stay a territory instead of becoming a state.
I say, they should either become a state, or stop sending the goodies. In other words, it's time to either sh*t or get off the pot.

No. They are better off the way they are now or becoming fully sovereign.puerto ricans do not want PR to become a state, they want to keep being puerto ricans in their own land with their governor who acts under the puerto rican constitution like a president.

I don't think so. We already have Louisiana as our welfare state. I'm sure that the Dems would love to increase their voting base with the ignorant poor.
