Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
If that doesn't work... Apple has a troubleshooting guide on their site.

Reset the iPod by holding down the center button and the Menu button at the same time until the screen goes blank, then the apple logo will reappear and the ipod will restart.
If the problem persists, then you might have to bring it back to the Apple Service Centre for help.

Mine has done that before. My friend said that when her iPod did that they looked it up on the internet to see what was wrong. She told me to switch the hold button multiple times and just kinda mess with the buttons, I don't know if that was the smart thing to do, but it worked for me!

My iPod did this before. Apparently this is a problem with iPods as most of my friends who have one say this has happened to them. What Petcreatures78 said above is exactly how the manual tells you to fix it. When mine froze, I was upset because I thought it was broken. I did what Petcreatures78 said and it unfroze right away. Don't worry--it will be fine.

Let the battery run down (if can't reset), recharge, then run Apple iPod updater.
You can find links, mirror of ephPod, and some repair information here (copy your MP3 back to Windows with out iTunes):
