There is a reason that the west side tends to be the last side to develop - in any large city. If you live on the west side, then when you commute to work in the city in the morning - you are heading east - looking right into the rising sun. When you commute home from work, you are headed west, looking right into the setting sun.
The west side of usually first seen as undesirable because of the glare of the sun; people fall in love with the south side earlier, but once the south, the east, and the north are developed, then cities develop their west sides - and then - once developed - people fall in love with the west side too.
so you are normal -- almost nobody loves the west side first, but they come to tolerate, then love the west side later.

I love West Side Story.
But my high school has "South" in its name, so when the theatre dept performs the musical, they modify the name to "South Side Story"
