There's a good article here:

The fact that people here don't automatically say Fuhr, Iginla and Weekes amazes me.
They're well-known players.
Almost two *dozen* players, total.
Pretty telling that we assume it's only been one or two, you know?
Hope that helps.

first ever black NHL player is Willie O'Ree who made his NHL debut in 1958, no other black athlete played in the NHL until 1974, when Mike Marson was drafted by the Washington Capitals.
just to name a few black NHL players that are well known
G.Fuhr also in the hockey hall of fame
J.Iginla won the scoring tittle and split a tree way tie for the top goal score, A. Carter, D. Brashear, R. Emery, M. Grier, G. Laraque and A. Stewart and that's to name a few. watch the game and then you would know.

Lots of great black players, my first fav was Tony McKegny when he played for Buffalo. Sad to see Grier go this year....
I think you'll see more and more black players in the future and that's great! The more attention payed to hockey the better!

There have been several and Tony McKegney was another good one who played mostly with St.Louis.
I think Nathan Horton of the Florida Panthers is black.
