I think it depends on the state or city. In Oklahoma, an application I'm looking at says 'Have you ever been convicted of a felony?' but I don't know if that means you couldn't get an apartment.

where do felons live then? Every felony is different and every landlord is different. My husband is a felon because of a drunk driving accident. We have rented, then bought a house and life goes on. If you have a felony for drug trafficking or for beating up a neighbor then some landlords may not want to rent to you.

Some places you can't.
I've been rejected from some apartments that were later given to illegals. How fair is that?
And about what Sha Sha said, yes, it's true, we are felons, but some of us have straightened our lives out but nobody can notice because narrow minded people like "Sha Sha" won't give us the time of day.

yes some places do background checks especially the HUD homes for low income. They also do credit checks on you. The best bet is to rent a house from a person instead of a apartment
I work in a HUD housing complex and we did not let in any ex offenders

I think this is true for some subsidized housing. They also need to know what you are convicted for. They seem to be reluctant to rent to a convicted drug dealer or child molester.

That is going to be very difficult, I have to say, they will give a lot of problems. But try renting with rent by owner.
Just not next to me OK>..lol

yes you can, i think it would be discrimination if that was the only thing that kept you from having a place to live.
