Inherited. My daughter has always had severe unfounded fears from the time she was an infant. I think her overactive imagination causes this... too many story books? She was terrified for instance when we'd go to the electronics store and all the tvs are tuned to the same channel. It would just overwhelm her. She's never been stung by a bee and I NEVER flinch around bugs, but she goes completely wacky around large flies and bees, and she's almost 14. So she's always had it... I didn't teach it to her but she also didn't inherit it from me.

People usually develop phobias from stuff that happened to them when they were real small. I guess, in the same sense they can be learned too cuz if your a child and you see your mom freak out about a spider chances are you are going to grow to fear spiders. On the other hand, if you see your mom gently pick up the spider and take it outside and free it when you are small you'll grow to treat them with the same care.

Learned. I have a cousin who is terribly afraid of thunderstorms. Hides in the closet and all that. With her first son she still did this for the first 3 years of his young life. Everytime it stormed she would run with him to the closet. By the time he was 2yrs he started doing iton his own. When she got pregnant with her second son I told her she had to stop doing that or it would make them just like her. She did not want this to happen so she forced herself to stop. Was very difficult during her pregancy with him. To this day her older son still runs to the closet and her younger son has no clue as to why the older son does this. We are products of our environment. Children learn what they live and live what they learned.

Ah, the neverendind, big sociological question! Scientists are still working on this one, but I don't think this is an either/or question. It is a both/and question. In other words, both are involved.

learned...your only afraid of something because it caused you to become frightened...I am afraid of needles because I had to have alot of testing done when I was younger and its stuck in my head that they "hurt" me...even though I'm slowing working my way to not being afraid of them
