Probably such a question might have been raised earlier.. would request you to give this a thought and some time. In the current international business scenario, we are seeing a trend of movement of business from the west to east, particularly China. With such a backdrop, is it a viable option for young b-school grads learn CHINESE (at least to the extent of speaking Chinese)?

Something like Chinese or Japanese would be very useful from a business side, although you may want to look into a slightly more obscure, or uncommen language, for instance being able to speak Thai, Vietnamese, or Cambodian fluently does gurantee you a job, especially if a lot of people are going to be learning other more popular languages.

French is an official language of the UN, NATO and EU, so from a purely useful viewpoint french is a great language, however german mustn't be forgotten, they seem to be running things in europe, also arabic is fantasticly useful and a lot of fun too.

It's absolutely crucial and far more benefitting than you think. If I ever have children, I'm going to make them learn multiple languages.

Here's why:

Even without a college degree, there are MANY jobs which the primary focus is fluency in other languages.

Personally, my ability to speak other languages has commanded top dollar from many companies; and it doesn't hurt that I speak THREE languages, not only 2 - English, Korean, and Spanish.

Take that with a BS degree (not associates - forget associates, go BS), and you are instantly making a little more than anyone else.

It relies upon the place you reside. in case you reside in Europe or the u . s . a . then the languages to examine could be Spanish & French. in case you're not at all going to circulate to China then there could be no factor gaining understanding of Mandarin e.t.c. except you needed to be an interpreter, then you definitely won't have the ability to examine too many languages. i does not propose attempting to examine better than 3 languages at as quickly as nonetheless. you will possibly get very at a loss for words.

Why only Chinese ? Japanese, Russian and French are equally important, if it is business that you are thinking about. How many can you learn, for the sake of your business ? But there is a great deal of pleasure in learning a language just for the sake of the language and the doors it opens to us.
I speak five languages reasonably fluently, and enjoy talking to people who can converse with me in their mother tongue, just as they enjoy doing so. Believe me, the study of languages is a great hobby.
