I have always thought that telling kids never to talk to strangers is stupid. Especially in public places and when other adults are around, I encourage my kids to strike up conversations with strangers. What you want them to understand is that they should not go somewhere with strangers, or get in their car, or be in any other private place with someone they do not know or trust. And basically kids can't be relied on to make decisions about who to trust, so they have to stay in the care of someone YOU trust.
Of course, if we're afraid of our children being molested or abducted, most of the perpetrators of those crimes are NOT strangers. The people you want your kids to watch out for are sometimes neighbors, or even teachers, or priests, or scoutmasters, or sometimes other family members, etc., etc. We need to encourage our kids to be more aware of possible harm from people that they know, and we don't do that by just giving them a blanket rule that they should never talk to strangers.

I think that we're not supposed to talk to strangers only applied when we were younger and our parents didnt want something bad to happen to us since when youre a young child you seem to think everyone is your friend. as you get older im sure the old saying changes =) because how are you supposed to meet people

That rule is directed toward children talking to adults. And online as well, when you never know who in the world you are talking to. Children can meet other children around the neighborhood, Adults can meet other adults around the neighborhood..but a child should not talk to an unknown adult, unless the parents OK it before hand.

Strangers are considered people older than you are. Meeting people that are in your same age category is fine, but if you are 14 and a 43 yr. old man is trying to talk to you, then run for life because he's a stranger...among other names that I could call him but I won't. :-)

I think you shouldn't talk to strangers that approach you and pushy but if your with a crowd or friends its ok to get information and slowly get to know them with someone you trust or have them checked out thats politically correct
just always be very careful and think before you act and you still can meet people and be safe

It's best to met people from people you already know. I've been married 13 years and I'd hate to have to be in the dating scene again.

That rule is meant mostly for children, who don't know the difference between a child molester and a friend. by the time you reach adulthood, you're suppose to realize that...
