I'm getting ready to be a senior in highschool and am thinking about the different options. I would like to go into Diagnostic Medical Sonography which is only a 2 year program, thus the reason why i want to go to a community college. I've made straight A's in highschool and am in honors classes. My parents also believe that a university would look better than a community college and keep telling me i could go anywhere i want. i can't find universities that offer only 2 year programs, which i have tried telling my parents. I have researched colleges that teach this major and almost all of them are community colleges. What do i do? please help!

A compromise may be for you to get your two year degree and then transfer to a university. Many universities will let you transfer with full junior status. It saves money, yet gets you the same degree.

On a side note, if your parents are willing to pay - take advantage of that and get as much education as you can! It is seriously expensive.

If you are 100% sure that that is what you want to do, then just let them know.

However, I went to a community college before transferring to a University, and the quality of the education is alot better at Universities. If you made straight A's you should honestly take advantage of that and go to a University. You'll probably be able to find a similar field, and it would lead to a career that would pay alot more then a job that requires only a 2 yr degree.

In my opinion, most people are better off doing the 4 yr degree. Especially when they have the opportunity to do it, like you do.

I agree with the parents. A well known university in your area, or even out of state would look much better on a resume further down the line than a community college. I understand the deal for the 2 years, but you cram so much into them, you may end up forgetting something important. That is why 4 years is so much better. Plus most universities are accredited which employers are looking more and more into, and a lot of those 2 year schools aren't. Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

Honestly....if you're sure that you want to do the trade you've mentioned then the 2 year community college would be fine. You'll learn specifically how to work in the field & do the job you're interested in, as well as have great job placement! Myself and almost everyone else I know is NOT working in the field that we obtained our Bachelors degree in.

And if at a later time you decide that you'd like to do something else...then you could always transfer your Associates degree to a four year university and just complete the other 2 years worth of coursework for your Bachelors.

People should work in a career that they like/love as opposed to what pays the most money or what looks more prestigious. You sound like a really smart guy who knows what he wants to do. So realize that it's your life, not your parents. You're the one who'll deal with the consequences if you make a mistake, not them. Of course they'll try to change your mind...they're parents. Just stick to your conventions and you'll do fine.

Man although a University will look even better than a community college, That's a Hard Decision...........
I myself would go to a 2 yr program ( I have 2 boys to support)
You are single and smart, and should go with what the Real Working World will Want....As dumb as it is and even though it will take a bit longer....Id say go to the University.....But if you strongly feel that you need to RUSH and minus 2 more school years...than go for it. I'm sure whatever your decision is It will Work out for the best...Good Luck!!!!

Well, you have two choices. Keep trying to explain your choice to your parents and go to community college. However, if they are footing the bill, find a 4-yr program. Odds are the medical sonography is a certificate program that you can enter during or after you finish a bachelor's.

Although the ultimate decision rests with you, its much better to go to Community College if the program u r interested in is offered there only...go and see a counselor at the school (comm. college) and take ur parents long with you, probably they'll understand more when a person in authority endorses ur choice...also u can always go to a University after you're done with Comm. College and that way u'll already have completed some of the pre-reqs for advanced study in ur chosen field.

Talk to ur parents and make the things amply clear to them..by backing up with strong evidence-esp. documentary. Try talking to people who are currently working in this field and ask for their advice..I bet some of them will gladly answer ur queries...tell ur parents about them too.

Also, I feel Comm. Colleges offer quite a good education wrt to what you pay for..I have always liked them.

Hope this helps and good luck in ur endeavor.

If your parents want you to go to a university you should try it out. i know you dont want to but like your parents keep telling you it will look so much better if you do go. Granted community colleges work but if you have good enough grades i think you should go to a university. And you said you make A's but now the rest is up to you. You need to do what you feel is right your the one going to college not your parents so GOOD LUCK!!!

I've had more education for more years than you'd believe to earn my parents approval. At 55, I'm looking at the same course you are. From an nationally recognized university to a community college. Hundreds of thousands dollars and years wasted. I know many whom are happy with two yr. degrees. I know many BA's, BS's, and higher with menial jobs.

There are Colleges and Universities that offer two yr. degrees.

If your parents are paying for it?? Go to the university? So it take an extra year to get the degree. It's better than an AA or AS and if you take more than the minimun classes per semester you can finsih earlier than 4 years or whatever.
Not costing you so go for it!! Be glad you don't have to find the means to go to any college.
