Diamond willow is willow distinctively shaped as the result of attack by fungus Valsa sordida, which has resulted in a diamonding effect occurring in the wood of the shrub or tree as the tree forms diamonds in response to the infection.for more visit:

It depends on what region you live in. Diamond willow is found in swampy areas where the most mosquitoes are also found. The tree has become infected with a disease which cause dead-like spots and the rest of the bark grows around it, thus causing the diamond effect. The best time to go find it is in the spring when the bark comes off easy and when the mosquito level isn't as quite as bad as in the summer. The bark looks as though it is almost fuzzy with lichens. It takes a year for the inside core to dry so if you are going to work on a piece before it dries, don't go too deep into it. I have several pieces that I'm working on. If you are going to work on diamond willow though I would recommend that you get yourself a dremel with the various bits. I have 4 of them. Electric and cordless. BTW- nice choice of avatar.
