I am the main person at my job, a small law firm, and I have been here for 7 years. Besides the two attorneys, there is only one other person at my job and she started about 8 months ago with no experience. I believe it is time for a change in my life. I have been offered another job, but we are still working out the salary, etc. and I'm not really sure that I will accept it. I am sure that I want to leave my present job. It just bores me to death. I know all there is to know about it.

The new job is through a friend and they know that I want to give my current boss more than 2 weeks' notice

I would say a month. Give your boss some time to find someone to replace you.

Well, your new job won't want to wait a month! You should do it in 2 weeks of less. No one really expects more than that. Unless your boss is a real jerk and doesn't respect you give him/her 2 wks.

Also, I do a little planning and line things up. For instance, if you have insurance with them then you may want to make sure you work through to at least the beginning of the following month (August 1st). Usually, this gets you another month of insurance. I also look for any paid holidays that are close by that I can snag by extending my leave date and try to take all your paid time off now. Just make sure you schedule it before you quit.

This is more than likely the last time you will be with these people at your soon to be old job, so go out to a few long lunches with them enjoy their company while you are there. It will help to keep your confidence up as you take on your new job!

Good Luck!

If you are the main person...and you know you are going to be leaving..I would discuss it with your present employer now. Give them AT LEAST a months notice considering you have been there 7 years. They are going to need time to find someone to replace you, and it would be very decent of you to stick around and even train the new person since you are pretty much the only person around.

I just quit my job after 4 years. I would definitly give at least a 2 weeks notice. Just to leave in good terms. You never know you may use them as a reference in the future.
