All it does is makes it a nanosecond longer to access certain webpages.
Cookies are only there to make it quicker for your usual webpages to load, when you visit them. It wont harm your computer at all.

Some websites may load a bit slower, but after that the cookies for that website will be automatically stored again, its good to clean those out from time to time because ads can put cookies there and it uses up some space.

other than that, you may get hungry if you erase cookies, but it's all good

DO IT! It will stop people from being able to keep tabs on what you do and where you visit!
Some cookies are quite harmless, but some are seriously NOT nice. Since you can't tell which is which, delete them all.
I suggest that you download 2 bits of free software (if you do not already have them).
1) AVG Free, which is about the best Anti Virus software available
2) Addaware, which will keep track of all those cookies for you

If you want to manage your cookies effectively, use a free cookie manager like Cookie Jar
- http://www.snapfiles.com/get/cookiejar.html
that way you can keep the ones you need like Yahoo, Amazon etc
