I've never been before and I'm scared. What do they do? Does it hurt? Isn't it kinda embarassing having someone look down there?

HELP!

It's uncomfortable, yes, but it does not hurt unless you make it hurt. You need to relax and just let the doctor do what he/she needs to do. It's for your health. They put your feet up and have you scoot to the edge of the table and look inside you, take a culture of your cervix, and feel your ovaries and uterus for any lumps.

It could mean saving your life....generally Pap smears and internals are not done until you are sexually active...which I am presuming you are....at least that's how it went with my doctor and I have had her since I was 12 years old...unless I had concerns about something down there....she never did anything invasive until I told her I had become sexually active. Anyway, I remember a long time ago speculems were made of metal...stainless steel I'm guessing....those were more uncomfortable than the plastic ones my MD uses today...she used to always warm the metal one up...but some docs might not bother. I think the worst part of the whole exam is trying to relax your muscles against the speculem which is being used to open up your vaginal canal to better view the cervix and obtain specimens. The brushing of the inside of the cervix has a burning sensation but it is brief....after she usually will do an internal to feel the ovaries and the uterus for abnormalities. I will admit...there is nothing "easy" about it but I would rather do it once a year than have one year to live because ovarian cancer had a chance to spread to other organs and eventually kill me. I know it sounds harsh but I am only being honest. Tell your doctor you are nervous and ask him/her to explain what they are doing throughout the exam and to forewarn you when something might be more uncomfortable...take slow deep breaths and you should be fine. My doc is swift about it...the whole exam takes her about 5 minutes to complete.
Hope this helps :)

Well, it's kind of embarassing but you'll get used to it (and remember, they've seen *everything* before). Try to relax during the exam, it won't be as uncomfortable. That whole part of it is over pretty quickly anyway.

Win win for who? the guy continuously desires a win win concern do no longer forget approximately woman can play that activity too. With the way you communicate it's going to be back to bit you problematic later sooner or later. Now you gained your entertainment circulate back to staring at television or despite you do.

I feel uncomfortable every time I go and I'm 26. The best thing to do is to remember that the person is a doctor. It does hurt a bit especially if you are a virgin.
