I'd buy her a really nice travel bag and fill it with things such as a book, magazine, puzzle book, pen and paper, sun screen, small hand towel, fresh wipes, lip gloss, a mirror, little snacks and a soft drink.

Personally, I'd get her a pack-away waterproof poncho-type thingy. It's boiling hot here by our standards but it can suddenly belt down with rain at any moment - it did this afternoon.
If you want to spend more money, buy her some sensible walking shoes and get her to wear them before she goes - a lot of the UK was built before cars and she is bound to have to walk further than you ever do (in my experience anyway) in urban America.

Depends on where he/she is going. You could get her favourite magazine, bottle of water, a snack to take with her on the plane or road trip and a little necklace or tiny stuffed toy to think of you while she's away. aww.....
Could work for a guy going away but I'd find something other than a cuddly toy for him! *G*
