We can use dna testing to determine if someone is the parent of the child, so why don't we allow a woman to force a man she knows is the father of her child to be tested. Then, if he is found to be the father, he is forced to pay to help support the child.

I think it is a tragedy that a woman would get an abortion because she feels she can not support the baby.

What do you all think of the idea?

A woman does have this option, at least in Delaware. She may apply to the Family Court and petition the Court for a paternity test against the probable father. Lab tests will then be set up for all three parties: mother, child and purported father. If the man is proven to be the father, the mother may then, with the help of the Division of Child Support Enforcement, file a petition for child support against the father, who is ordered to pay support.

I assume there are similar laws in other states as well. Check with your equivalent of the Family Court and Child Support Enforcement agency.

I agree that it is a tragedy that a child has to be aborted because two people cannot use a little common sense and realize that there are ways to avoid getting pregnant. if you are against birth control and don't want a child, the practice abstinence.

However, "forcing someone" to be DNA tested starts getting pretty close to the limit of invasion of rights. I am not saying I am against it, I am just saying that there need to be some controls inplace. For example, what if I deny ever sleeping with the woman? What if she is using the test to get back at me for some reason? Who pays for the test if I am the father? What if I am not the father? Is this to be a federal law or a state law?

Considering that there are an incredible number of deadbeat parents out there, I agree that something needs to be done - hey, if you can't support the child, don't get wild - but I don't know if this is the answer.

Women do have have that choice and the state will even help in most cases. And there is NO reason to have an abortion even if you can not afford the child. In most states you can leave your child at the hospital, a church, or a police station and just walk away with nothing done to you. Or you can give the child up for adoption the proper way. There are a lot of couples who want children but are not able to conceive. There is always an alternative rather than murdering a baby(abortion).

I agree on using DNA when the man refuses to be involved however, I disagree on using it to prevent women from getting abortions. Many times, it's not that woman cannot afford to have a child (there are lots of public assistance programs), it has more to do with the fact that emotionally they are not ready to handle that responsibility.

Giving birth to a child simply because the father will be providing monetary assistance will not make her emotionally stable, nor does it mean she will be a better/fit mother.

According to PA law, a woman can force a man to undergo genetic testing to verify paternity. It would really suprise me if other states did not also allow for this. The problem is that many young mothers do not know their rights and hiring an attorney would be an exhorbitant financial burden.

A mother can take a man to court and have the judge order a paternity test in order to find out if he owes child support.

At least that what I'm told.

Females need to stop having sex with multiples or one-night-stands or sleeping with a new guy after just breaking up with her old bf a week ar two before! That would stop all of this. Have some pride! You guys also! Think about your future. I won't even bring religion into it. You should be financially, mentally, emotionally and physically stable and old enough and mature enough to handle the consequences of all problems that come with sex. It wouldn't hurt to be in a good relationship with a reliable mate also.

You could go to court to make the guy be tested, but abortion should never be a choice. Its not the babies fault, give birth and then let the baby be adopted. Their are crises pregnancy programs out there and Medicaid to help with expenses.

I believe forcing a man to be tested is already an option, bu I think you have to go throught the courts to do it.

I think a woman deserves what she gets if she's getting herself in that kind of position in the first place. It's simply irresponsible.
