I recently read about the problem in India where they are aborting babies because they are girls and girls are looked at as a liability for the family. That is disturbing enough, but what kills me is the fact that they blame the mother for this and ostricize her if she has a girl. Don't these people realize it's the MAN who determines the sex of a child? Somebody needs to start a campaign and teach this horrible male dominated society the truth about conception. If the men want somebody to blame, blame yourself!

Ignorance....just plain ignorance.

I am an east indian and there are members in my family with only daughters and perfetly happy! This happens only in some parts of East India...people who have not finished school. Not all Indians are like that but like Some Americans....and other cultures they will keep trying for a boy....If a family has more than 2 children and only the last one is a boy, you know that happened!

Once again the practice you mentioned is abhorable but happens only in a minority of families....there are laws against it but govenrment cannot implement it on more than one billion people -even if only 1% is doing it, it is still 10 million.

I am not advocating for the abortions (in fact, I am pro-life) but I also think that it is unjust to judge them without understanding their values and beliefs. While the thought process of aborting female babies is horrific to our society there is many other pieces you are not seeing. Many of the grown woman are put into arranged marriages and the father of the daughter must pay (a dowry) to the groom's family for the marriage. This can be financially crippling for a poor family.

The numbers are shocking especially considering selective abortions have been banned in India for at least 20 years.

"Last year the well-known religious leader and social activist, Swami Agnivesh, began a campaign across five northern and western states against female foeticide." BBC News

- I suggest that you check out the work of this man and see if you can support his cause or start your own campaign after researching the topic so that you have a greater understanding of why their culture supports this thinking.

The Western media tends to generalize a lot when it comes to other cultures. It is not all over India. It is only in some parts of India especially in the North.

Yes, it is bad but they are beginning to realize the consequences now. I read that in some communities there is a shortage of girls for the men to marry. This is reversing the trend. Now the parents of the girls are demanding large dowries and now many families want girls.

No, no, no. Don't go blaming anybody. What's important is that they see the value of women, so nobody minds having a daughter. That would sort out the problem much faster than trying to change their religious views through science. By the way, women are gaining ground in business and politics in India, these things take time.
