These coughs are not without reason. Each cough is an acknowledgment that a message has been received from an inter-galactic alien. Be warned!

It could be a reaction to a noise that your chair is making that bothers that person (like nails on a chalkboard), and they cough so they don't have to hear the sound.

1. They're looking for attention
2. An invisible speck of dust flew their way
3. They're trying to conceal a laugh
4. They were crying and are attempting to hide a whimper
5. They were ogling someone inappropriately and are detracting attention from their hanging jaw
6. They disapprove of someone's behavior and want to drop a hint
7. They're wearing new clothes and want someone to notice
8. They smelled someone's number and are trying to blarf without offending
9. Someone said something offensive and they're 'commenting' without commenting
10. They had fish that day and a stray bone got in their throat...

Some people have nervous coughs...to fill the void in a conversation. You may be taking your friend by surprise & it is an unconsious reaction.

They look at your butt and want it!...You can always do it back and act like the joke is back on them. Or do something irrigating back see how they like it.
(Of course, I'm just immature enough to handle the situation like that)...but...I suppose a bigger person would just point it out and call them on it. This way they know YOU GET what's up and maybe they will stop.

Maybe he was captively trying to pay attention to the chair, and he wanted to tell you to stop moving it without being rude.

For a lot of people it can be part of a nervous habit. Sounds wierd but it's true.
